Sleep is necessary for the brain (and body) to function properly. How much sleep you need is individual.
Previously, I needed about 12 hours sleep to be rested and ready for a new day. I was all awake within minutes of waking up, but I felt effortless shortly afterwards (unless it was a really good day). After I started on a low-carb diet, I suddenly had a lot more energy to my disposal, and my sleep requirement shrunk to 7-9 hours a night, depending how long I was up yesterday and what I did. My energy levels stay high until (late) evening, at which point it is time to sleep again.
